President Michael TejedaPresident Michael Tejeda's President's Pen, July/August 2010

I am deeply honored to be nominated to serve as your president of Congregation B’nai Shalom. While attending a Congregational meeting in 1999, Bernie Notas and Larry Katz – with smiles and enthusiasm – persuaded me to sign a volunteer list. Shortly thereafter, I was on the Membership Committee and soon became the Membership Chair. The rest, as they say, is history.

For the past 10 years, Board participation has played an important part in my life. I have been Membership chair, Hadashot editor, Publicity chair, and Building and Grounds chair. I have served two terms as Vice President: Membership and Administrative. I have also served on multiple special committees.

This past decade has been one of challenge and opportunity for our shul. We have grown, in terms of the quality of our Jewish observance, the religious and social participation of our membership, and as a spiritual home for our members. We owe past presidents Craig Judson and Rayna Arnold sincere V’yasher Koach for their tireless efforts in guiding CBS.

The composition of the Board, Officers, and Executive Committee is changing due to recent modifications to our Bylaws (see the related article on page 5). Stan Goldman will be heading our financial team in the newly created role of Executive VP Financial, while Evan Nakisher will head the operations team in his role of Executive VP Operations.

We are fortunate to have able leaders on our Executive Committee. Rayna Arnold will serve as Education VP, Dorothy Blint as Religious VP, and Steve Unger as Membership VP. New faces this year include Sarah Liron as Treasurer and Joe Feller as Secretary.

In addition, I could not ask for a more talented General Board: Bob Clayton, Alan Cohen, Stacy Frauwirth, Ellen Geisler, JoAnn Knell, Bob Levine, Judith Miller-Isserman, Emily Nakisher, Chuck Quinn and Larry Rosenthal.

These past few years have been financially difficult for CBS. We have incurred significant debt at a rate that is not sustainable. Your new budget contains numerous reforms. It is crucial that I have your support.

First, we plan to make a serious effort to expand general fundraising. Our first general fundraisers will include our annual Ad Book, Rosh Hashanah Gift Bag Project and Yom Kippur Appeal. Later, we will plan a series of “fun” fundraisers. It is important that everyone participates – even if only at basic levels.

Second, we must rely on special fundraisers to provide for new programming initiatives. While we feel that these new programs are important, we will not be able to fund them without your help.

Third, we are planning a number of membership outreach initiatives, including targeted advertising and integration with our Preschool families. The summer is a perfect opportunity to encourage new membership. When you attend services or other activities, please welcome any new faces.

Finally, we cannot ensure fiscal solvency without increasing dues and controlling costs. Since we did not increase dues last year, we must now “catch up” by increasing dues by 5% ($10 monthly). Another cost containment proposal is to add merchant fees to credit card transactions charged by congregants. Your Board believes these two measures are vital to our fiscal health and will reduce our deficit by $40,000 annually.

The Operations Committee will focus on the “people” aspect of CBS. Are you interested in helping prepare our Kiddush luncheons? Can you spend a few hours in community outreach via our Tikkun Olam efforts? Are you willing to help plan social events? There is a place for everyone. Please contact Evan Nakisher.

I am proud to serve as president of our congregation for the next two years. At the end of my term, I hope that people will say of me that I tried, did my best and accomplished many good things.

L’shalom,

Michael Tejeda
