Religious School logoWelcome to the B’nai Shalom Religious School!
The Congregation B’nai Shalom religious school is an interactive Jewish supplementary school program committed to strengthening your child’s Jewish identity. The program teaches about the richness of Jewish life, culture, community and tradition through Torah, Hebrew, prayer, history, social justice, acts of loving kindness and promotes the incorporation of these Jewish values into their everyday lives.

Our core curriculum focuses on teaching the depth of Jewish prayer and the Hebrew language, values and the importance of community through Torah, God, Hebrew, Israel and the Jewish people.

Our excellent teaching staff uses a combination of formal, informal and active teaching methods to impart a quality curriculum that will excite and engage each student towards understanding Jewish tradition in a dynamic and relevant way. As each child moves through our program they will develop the skills necessary to live a vibrant Jewish life.

Gan - Pre-Kindergarten/ Kindergarten

  • During these years students will be exposed to basic Jewish concepts, holidays, Hebrew letters. Through a play and learn interactive format students will engage in hands on activities. Students must be at least 4 years old to participate in our Sunday Gan program.

This will be a small havurah type group which will allow the teacher to provide each student with the focused attention needed to ensure a strong Hebrew foundation providing the opportunity for effective Hebrew language development as the student develops.
    • All Yisod students will also do in-depth exploration into Shabbat and Havdalah.

Tzofim (Explorers)- 3rd-4th

Eitzim (Pillars) 7th

  • Students will meet Sunday and Wednesday
  • A standalone year dedicated to the continued development of the students’ Jewish identity. This program is broken into two separate classes. Sundays are a three- part curriculum focused on our Jewish past, present and future. Sunday’s curriculum begins with a unit on Family History. Each student has the opportunity to explore his/her Jewish family history and tell that story to the community. In addition to the student and family exploring their family history, students have the opportunity to develop their public speaking skills. The second unit will be a unit on understanding how we relate to one another from a Jewish perspective. Using the text of Pirke Avot (Ethics of our Fathers), students will learn how to make ethical Jewish choices. The third Sunday unit will be about the Shoa (Holocaust), students will learn the history of it, and its impact on the Jewish people. The third unit will culminate with a field trip to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.
  • The Wednesday curriculum is a service learning program dedicated to the development of students understanding of mitzvot, Conservative Judaism and making Jewish choices.

Congregation B’nai Shalom Religious School Service Requirements

Who? B’nai Shalom Religious School students (grades 3-7). For grades 3-6, the requirement will be handled through the school. For grade 7, the requirement is still monitored and defined by Hazzan Dinkin. Students in younger grades and Day School Students are encouraged to attend, too!

What? 10 services during the 2003-4 school year. (Additional occasions will be given for double service points.)

Where? Service attendance may be fulfilled by any B’nai Shalom Shabbat or holiday service.

When? See the schedule of Youth Shabbat services above. A party will be held on the last Youth Shabbat (in May) for those who have completed their requirement by that date.

Why? To enjoy Shabbat with friends. To sing the songs you learned at camp. To have fun. To give Hazzan Dinkin a great surprise when you show up for that first bar/bat mitzvah lesson and know practically the entire service.

How? To facilitate completion of this requirement, we are starting a Youth Shabbat program with age-appropriate services…

Youth Shabbat Programs

Derekh Shabbat: Grades 1-3

Students will receive opportunities to lead prayers and practice their skills.
