Has Jewish life here been fundamentally altered and seriously threatened by the rapid social and technological change of the past few decades? Or does today’s Jewish identity, practice, and activism reflect patterns that have persisted from the Gold Rush?

Fred Rosenbaum, the founding director of Lehrhaus Judaica, is the author of four books on local history, most notably the award-winning Cosmopolitans: A Social and Cultural History of the of the Jews of the San Francisco Bay Area.
