“Equality as a religious commandment goes beyond the principle of equality before the law. Equality as a religious commandment means personal involvement, fellowship, mutual reverence and concern.” Abraham Joshua Heschel

How can we, as Jews, understand racism in our laws and institutions, in our culture, and in ourselves? We will be exploring this question in a number of programs over the next several months, beginning with the 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge. The idea of the 21-day challenge is that it takes about 3 weeks to change old habits and develop new ones. In our challenge we will be reading, watching, listening, and learning how to recognize systemic and institutional racism, our own implicit bias, doing the personal work to change ourselves and our society. We will be using a program developed by the Michigan League for Public Policy, supplemented with other readings, videos, podcasts, and exercises. Participants will do daily activities and we will meet together via Zoom every Thursday from to for group discussion and reflection. The first meeting will be Thursday, July 16 and we will conclude on August 6. Our program will be coordinated with the 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge sponsored by the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County, providing opportunities to share our learning with other faith communities across the county and will include an optional online training offered by the Interfaith Council.

If you would like to participate or if you have questions, please contact Michael Fischer (mjf1155@gmail.com) or Ellen Liston (ellenliston@att.net). This program is endorsed by our Tikkun Olam committee.
