Candacy Taylor’s talk will capture the theme shared by many African Americans—“making a way out of no way.” The award-winning author and photographer will speak with passion about the history of the Green Book, which was a powerful rebuke of Jim Crow and reveal how this travel guide enabled people of color to navigate America’s roads. Her exhibit of this “overground railroad” is to be exhibited at the Smithsonian; her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, CBS Morning News and PBS Newshour. The Green Book was an important plot element in the 2018 Oscar-winning movie Green Book.
