Jewish Roman History: Josephus and The Jewish War

In this 6-week course we will do a text study of Josephus’s The Jewish War focusing on how Josephus portrays Jewish history from his standpoint as a Jew who was captured and fought for the Romans. The Jewish War Josephus writes about is also known as the First Jewish-Roman War, resulting in the destruction of the Second Temple. We commemorate the destruction of the Temple at Tisha B’Av and Judaism as we know it today is impacted greatly by the aftermath of the war. But what was Jewish life like during the war? How is the Jewish perspective portrayed through a Roman lens? And who exactly was Josephus and how do we reconcile his role in the war with his identity as a Jew? This class will center around these questions and push us to think about the ways ancient history affects Jewish identity today.
Students will be reading from The Jewish War: Revised Edition (Penguin Classics), ISBN-13: 978-0140444209, available wherever you buy or borrow books.
