Yom HaShoah Community Observance

The Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust, Yom HaShoah, will be remembered on Sunday, May 5 starting at 3:30 PM at Congregation B’nai Shalom, 74 Eckley Lane in Walnut Creek. This annual event, convened by the Contra Costa JCC and sponsored by all local synagogues, will begin with an interactive art project and then proceed with songs, prayers, and readings.

Seventy-nine years after the end of World War II, survivors of the Holocaust, their families, and members of the community will gather together at this time to remember not only the horrors of the period but also the valuable response of the resistance who stood firm against the horrors inflicted by the Nazis on Europe’s Jewish population as well as the odious crimes committed under Adolf Hitler’s rule. While some Jews were able to escape the Nazi carnage, the majority of them were imprisoned in concentration camps or killed almost immediately upon entering them. Approximately six million Jews who were murdered as a result of Nazi actions,
